From Radio Kerry:
The union which represents nurses and midwives is defending the rate of staff absenteeism at Kerry General Hospital. Figures published in today's Irish Examiner as part of a survey of hospitals in the HSE South and Mid West says the average number of absent staff at Kerry General is 5.25 per cent. Of the 15 hospitals surveyed, this puts Kerry General in seventh position.
Michael Dineen of the Irish Nurses and Midwives' Organisation says his union condemns people who take sick leave when they are not ill. He says the figures do not show why staff may be absent.
According to the INMO, there were 377 bed closures in total at Kerry General Hospital, including 29 surgical beds up to the end of July because of cut backs. The hospital's budget for this year has already over run by 1.73 million euro up to the end of June. Michael Dineen says it needs to be appreciated that staff are doing more in the health service with fewer resources and less money.
