From Radio Kerry:
Kerry County Councillors have approved proposed budget cuts of €1.32m, which will need to be implemented if central government funding is reduced. County Manager Tom Curran has proposed adjustments to the county’s budget for the remainder of the year, after Minister Phil Hogan indicated there may be a reduction in Kerry’s Local Government Fund Allocation for 2012. The Local Government Fund Allocation is paid on a quarterly basis; Kerry County Council received the full amount for quarters one and two, and a reduced allocation in quarter three. Now the Minister has signalled quarter four’s allocation may be reduced due to the level of compliance with the household charge. County Manager Tom Curran said the council has been prudent, but if they don’t make changes the council could end up with a deficit going into 2013. He doesn’t think the cuts indicated by the Minister will be realised, but he’s proposed adjustments in the 2012 budget including cost deferrals and savings in water services, roads, and housing. At the council's monthly meeting, Fianna Fáil Cllr John Brassil called on members to reject the proposal, and to write to the Minister about the cuts he described as reckless. Councillors were tied in a vote, but ended up accepting the €1.32m proposed budget adjustments.
