Jarveys in Killarney say they will wait and see how a new penalty point system works before determining if it's a good thing for the industry. This week the National Parks and Wildlife Service published a list of penalty point offences ranging from failing to empty dung catchers to preventing abuse of horses.
This is in a bid to regulate all commercial activities within Killarney National Park and will also cover boat owners. If an operator gets 10 points they will be suspended. NPWS Regional Manager Pat Dawson says the system will be fair, open and transparent and aims to encourage holders to comply with the terms of their permits.
Mr Dawson said they have been meeting with jarveys and so far there has been no negative response. No points have been issued so far. Chairman of the Killarney Jarvey Association Pat O'Sullivan says they will see how they system works over the coming months:
