A QUIET Tralee neighbourhood was rocked by a vicious assault by thugs on a resident near his home in which he suffered serious facial injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The attack has led to widespread outrage in the town as the man in his mid50s was viciously assaulted without provocation late at night by callous thugs.
Well-known Tralee man Donal O'Mahony, Ard Carraig, Caherslee is in Cork University Hospital following the brutal altercation in which he was set upon by a gang of youths as he walked home with a friend late on Saturday night.
Mr O'Mahony was rushed to hospital immediately after emergency services arrived at the scene and had to be transferred to Cork University Hospital for specialist treatment due to the seriousness of the injuries he incurred. His friend was also taken to hospital, with lesser injuries, and has since been released.
Residents of the ordinarily peaceful estate and Mr O'Mahony's many friends around the town were horrified by Saturday night's attack.
It occured as Mr O'Mahony was walking home with a friend at around 2.30am on Sunday morning, having attended his niece's 18th birthday party at the Abbey Gate Hotel.
Gardaí said they are taking the matter very seriously and have spoken to a number of people in connection with it as part of their investigation. "We're treating the matter very seriously and have spoken to a number of people in connection with it," a spokesperson for the Tralee gardaí said.
"We would appeal to anyone in the area who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour on the night to contact us at Tralee Garda Station to aid in our investigation," he added.
Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris voiced the outrage of many locals over the attack, describing it as ' brutal and callous':
"The attack on these men was both brutal and callous. It has left one with very serious head injuries and he is still recovering in hospital.
He said those responsible need to be 'removed' from the streets of the town and urged people to help the gardaí.
"I would call on anybody who saw anything suspicious or has any information to bring it to the Gardaí. Those behind this attack must be removed from our streets to ensure there can be no repeat of this. The people of Tralee deserve to be able to enjoy a night out and not be afraid to walk home."
So, any thoughts?
